CYBELE – Our Origins

The ancient Greeks held the view that music had a substantial influence
on mankind: one’s mental equilibrium could be thrown out of balance
by music, it could even lead one to a particular action or decision.

The Greeks experienced in music no artificial feelings, but instead extremely real ones. Music moves the entire human, all the way to his physical emotions. For this reason, music, along with poetry, was from the beginning part of the foundation of the Hellenes’ “Paideia” and their general education system for children.

CYBELE, the “great mother of the gods”, came from Phrygia to Greece, where she was worshipped as the goddess of nature and fertility. With a crown on her head, she holds in one hand a tympanon (hand drum) and in the other spikes of corn or a sceptre – both ancient displays.
The festivals honoring CYBELE were always celebrated with orgiastic, provocative music – with flute, rattle and tympanon – and the participants especially enjoyed these popular and simple folk groups. In these festivals, however, the ancient moralists saw great danger. To them, the new CYBELE music, in the emerging Phrygian mode, meant “a mode of wild passion and ecstasy”. And like today, one finds in the ancients that much of the unknown – and its unforeseeable effects – was regarded with mistrust or absolute rejection. Something new meant something dangerous in the art world too. Today, though, one sees that this music and poetry has lived on.

Today, these works are considered pillars of our cultural history. No matter how controversial, misunderstood or odd those works of art were at the time, they give us a glance at our time. These days, modern music, art and literature also have a difficult time being accepted by a wide audience, despite the fact that, without a doubt, it should be.

Here we highlight the Activities of CYBELE RECORDS:

We discover new music and literature and make the so-called niche repertoire more easily available to the public.

We rediscover classics and dust them off through fresh interpretations of the highest artistic and technical level.

We discover fascinating composers and authors – some forgotten, some not yet known. In the process, unusual première recordings emerge.

We work with the latest technology and rediscover the qualities of old technologies.

CYBELE – The Label That Delights in Making Discoveries

In 2004, CYBELE, the innovative label for contemporary and classical music as well as literature, celebrates its tenth anniversary. Since 1994, we have released 80 productions, which are distributed worldwide.

CYBELE has made it its task to promote the classics of the future, through both the high profile of the repertoire and recording techniques. Thus, for CYBELE, the innovative and first-class Super Audio CD format (SACD) plays a decisive role: the unique surround sound technology enables a listener to hear previously unknown sound dimensions and to have a completely modern audio experience, one on a new level of enjoyment. Since 2003, we have worked exclusively with this SACD format. In May 2004, CYBELE had a more than 2% share of all classical SACD releases in the world.

CYBELE – Music

We issue a broad spectrum of contemporary music, as well as exciting works from earlier eras.

- Contemporary Music

As “the label that delights in making discoveries” (Der Spiegel), we work with numerous composers and musicians in the field of contemporary music. Presenting their works to a wider audience and raising awareness of the music of our time are some of our principal goals here at CYBELE . Finally, the cornerstones for a bright musical future have been put in place.

- Classical Music

When dealing with works that are now called classics, we must be sure that they do not become future dust-collectors by presenting them in new interpretations and with the most worthwhile, sharpest recording technology available. Since the beginning, we have made it a priority to let these classic works resound anew, thanks to brilliant musicians and “recording technology at the highest level” (FonoForum).

- Organ Music

“L’Orgue Mystique”, the large organ cycle by the French composer Charles Tournemire, marked the début of the CYBELE label in 1994. The first CD alone – of the fourteen CDs planned – aroused the attention of specialists. In addition to the extraordinary interpretation and excellent sound quality, numerous critics praised the set, saying that a label had finally deemed it worthy enough to release it in full.
This project was followed by recordings of music by the almost entirely unknown Spanish composer Juan Bautista Cabanilles – hailed by the press as “musical jewel”.
With the rediscovery of music by the German-American composer Wilhelm Middelschulte, CYBELE succeeded in 1998 in achieving another “respectable, honorable rescue” (FonoForum) of a now-forgotten but once well-known composer.
In the near future, a few of the previously-released Tournemire CDs, along with portions of the complete organ cycle that have yet to be heard, will be issued in new interpretations and in SACD surround sound quality. The impressive sonic results give the impression that the church and organ are right there with the listener in his or her living room. CYBELE will continue to compare its own productions to the latest technology available and adapt accordingly – as both the music and our ears deserve.

CYBELE – Audio Books
Surround Sound Theatre for the Ears

On the occasion of CYBELE’s 10th anniversary in 2004, we founded an audio book series. All CYBELE audio books are also released in the new Super Audio CD format (SACD). On an SACD, even the most minute, quiet sound nuances and expressive possibilities, as well as music and one’s speaking voice, are reproduced in a manner faithful to all of their attributes. The invisible movie, a film for the ears alone, may finally unfold, like hearing the performance live...

In this series, CYBELE uses its strengths as a music label to offer aficionados of spoken literature listening experiences, which through specially recorded or composed music, enable a completely new level of fascination.
The focal point of our audio book series is literature whose themes already touch upon musical elements. Moreover, collaborations between modern writers and composers are currently in preparation and thus, new stories and compositions will soon emerge especially for this series.

The series started with two important SACDs: a co-production with WDR of “Machandelboom” by Rolf Riehm and CYBELE’s own production of the “Tangogeschichten” (“Tango Stories”) by Katrin Dorn, spoken by Mirjam Wiesemann, and with musical accompaniment by the duo “Tango Amoratado”.
